Finding the right tone for your website

If you are starting out writing content for your website, finding the balance between a professional tone and one that appeals to readers can be difficult. Never approach the content as you would if writing a personal blog or updating your social network page. Although some may enjoy an informal tone many will not and your online reputation could become tarnished. There is a very fine line between finding a level with your audience and projecting an unprofessional image.

However you don’t want to bore visitors to death either. There are ways you can lift the content so that it is lighter in tone. Use short and snappy pieces of text and break up pages of content with bullet points and headings. When approaching the product and category pages descriptions must be kept nice and clear. Information needs to be accurate so that potential customers are clear about the features and benefits of your product offering.

The tone of other content on the site will usually be dictated by the markets or industries within which you operate. If you deal with formal services such as law or even funeral services then it stands to reason that the tone of your site will serious in tone. However if your products are less sombre then there is room to write in more colloquial manner making the text more light hearted in tone.

Always keep the target audience in mind as this is often the best way of setting the correct tone and developing firm foundations for positive internet reputation management.
